Disaster Relief via Kitchen Kits

Shortly after the tornados hit in Sunnyvale/Garland/Rowlett, Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Disaster Response ministry trained many members of Tree of Life Lutheran Church to respond. During the training, it was suggested that a committee be formed specifically for disaster response. This was done and a work day was set to help clean up debris.  Read more about the work day here and here.

On the work day, 200 flood buckets were given to Tree of Life to distribute to local area donation centers.  They were provided by the Disaster Care Ministry of Beautiful Savior LCMS.  This and the training prompted Tree of Life to ask the question, "What is our niche when it comes to disaster response?"  We continued to pray to God for direction.

Tree of Life started contacting local food banks and donation centers that were helping families impacted by the tornados.  We asked, "What is one thing that Tree of Life could collect for you?"  The answer over and over again was, "Can Openers.  We have so many cans but no way to get the families into the food."

We put this need before the congregation and were able to distribute over 50 can openers to 3 food bank / donation centers.  After this, more needs were brought up: silverware to eat with, dish soap and wash cloths.

The committee realized that this was Tree of Life's niche.  Thus the first "Kichen Kit" was assembled (see picture below).

Tree of Life Lutheran Church is now working on assembling many "Kitchen Kits".  The hope is to provide these to food pantries in the Garland/Rowlett area.

We would also like to give "Kitchen Kits" to Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Disaster Response ministry on their next disaster response.  For the last three years, they have been called out to respond to a disaster over Memorial Day weekend.  Our lofty goal is to have 200 assembled to send with them https://www.lcms.org/disaster.
